Description

Gilchrist model 4 Classic mandolin (used - 2003) Ser.# 03542 Exc.+ cond. A rare F-4 oval hole style instrument from luthier Steve Gilchrist. Amber varnish finish over fine grain, handcarved spruce soundboard and figured "shell" maple back, sides, and neck. Black binding with triple bound purfling, traditional flowerpot peghead inlay, gold plated tuners with ebony buttons, arched ebony fretboard with dot inlay, tortoise shell style pickguard with gold plated clamp connection, herringbone rosette, and custom hinged Gilchrist tailpiece. Great tone, balance, and power. Red Calton case with black interior.

Carmel Music Co. owner, Dexter Johnson, has been building, repairing, and restoring acoustic guitars and mandolins since 1969. You can hear one of his custom made guitars played by Jerry Garcia on the Acoustic Disc release Garcia/Grisman (track 9 - "Arabia"). He also worked extensively with his friend, mandolin virtuoso David Grisman, on the Tone Poems 1, 2 and 3 discs setting up the vintage instruments for the recording sessions and co-writing the album notes with David.
