Summary
1903 manufacture date (traditional estimates)
1904 shipment date, according to Spann's Guide to Gibson
Mandolin, Style F2
Serial 2790
Factory order number unknown
Description
Has a graft-style (scarf joint + dowels) repair on the neck and a 20s style sunburst & pickguard.. the refinish/sunburst looks like roughly 1920s gibson work, as does the heavily angled "The Gibson" peghead inlay. The original peghead fascia would have had a larger bolder script for the logo.
Tailpiece cover, bridge appear original. Handel tuners are probably original as well.. the top half of the neck is probably a replacment.. in one of the shots you can see the cut plates from what are probably the original Handels, but they do not overhang the edge, which leads me to believe the entire peghead is new. An interesting old bird with a story to tell!
