1912 Gibson F4 Mandolin #13100

Summary

1912 manufacture date (traditional estimates)
1911 shipment date, according to Spann's Guide to Gibson
Mandolin, Style F4
Serial 13100
Factory Order number: 1663

Description

3-point black finish. This is a transitional F4, having the raised pickguard (with 2 violin chinrest-style clamps), maple back, and double flowerpot peghead inlay.

The tailpiece cover is now the standard F4 design, and not the "pineapple" one seen on earlier Gibsons (a replacement?)

This mandolin has the latest known serial number for a 3-point F mandolin, and may have been a special order, old stock, or some other type of exception.

The style of the scroll carving evident in this picture is much more like the older 3-points.. most later ones have a ridge on the scroll that looks like the letter "S", with the tail of the ridge ending in the third point.

Highest known serial on a 3-pointer
